Renzo Piano presented the designs for the three hospitals funded by the Niarchos Foundation as part of the ESN “Helping health in Greece” initiative, at the headquarters of the Foundation in Athens, in the presence of Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, President of the Niarchos Foundation, Andreas Dracopoulos, and leading Greek authorities.
The project involves the construction of two General Hospitals, in Komotini and Sparta, and a Pediatric Center in Thessaloniki. The Genoese architect, with Andreas Dracopoulos, described the global tenets of the designs: establishing optimal and dignified conditions for patient care, creating spaces with abundant natural light, engendering important relationships with nature and the surrounding greenery.
The three hospitals, which will be completed by 2025, are to be structures built to ensure high seismic resistance, durability and sustainability. Milan Ingegneria is in charge of the structural design with a specific focus on seismic safety and sustainability.
