Restoration of the Excelsior Hotel, Venice Lido (Italy)
The Excelsior Hotel was commissioned by the Venetian entrepreneur Nicolò Spada with a design by architect Giovanni Sardi. After only 18 months of work the hotel was inaugurated in 1908. The hotel soon became the favorite destination for affluent celebrities, movie stars and royal families, welcoming guests such as Winston Churchill, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Marlene Dietrich, Barbara Hutton, John Steinbeck, Ingrid Bergman and the Aga Khan. In 1932 the hotel terrace entertained the first edition of the Venice Film Festival and has been an important element of the event since then.
The restoration, carried out respecting the original features of the building, largely comprises structure consolidation, system refurbishment and earthquake adaptation, applying reinforced structural plasters of high strength, reinforced with carbon fibers, basalt and glass. A total restyling of the interior spaces is also planned.
