University Pediatric Hospital in Thessaloniki (Greece)
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation is a philanthropic organization that funds projects in the fields of art, culture, education, health and social well-being. In 2017, Architect Renzo Piano, along with Milan Ingegneria, was commissioned by the Foundation to design the University Pediatric Hospital in Thessaloniki as part of the ESN “Helping health in Greece” initiative.
Located just a few kilometers from the city center, the hospital is the first public pediatric facility outside Attica, serving northern Greece.
The building comprises 5 levels. The basement, ground and first floors are all in concrete. A mezzanine – scaled off the second floor – is a weaving of steel and wood with crossed layers (CLT). In the southern sector, the ground and first floors are in prestressed concrete giving way to thin slabs on prominent spans. This part is separated by a structural joint. The second and third floors are made of wood, with lamellar columns and beams supporting the CLT floors. The photovoltaic canopy shades the roof-top, and the facades are formed of steel. The design was conceived to obtain distinction with LEED Gold certification.
