New Hospital in Siracusa (Italy)
The international ideas competition announced by the Provincial Health Authority of Siracusa for the New Hospital project was won by Studio Plicchi with Milan Ingegneria, Ava Arquitectura Tecnica, Sering, Areatecnica, and Trentino projects.
The Masterplan of the hospital system is designed with the utmost respect for the environment and the landscape. The project provides for a 100.000 sqm Equipped Urban Park, where patients and guests can make use of areas equipped for children’s play and for rest. This green environment is an essential component of patient well-being and recovery.
The hospital architecture has strong references to the “Genius Loci” of Syracuse, in both structure and materials, inspired by the presence of the sea and the illustrious individuals of this ancient city.
The hospital will be adaptive, providing innovative answers and solutions in line with the evolution of medicine and patient care. It will consist of outpatient clinics, ER and diagnostics, 16 surgeries and 425 single rooms. The car park with photovoltaic panel canopies will shield 1.400 cars.
The structure and technologies to be used will provide the best conditions for well-being, safety, environmental quality and optimal operating conditions. Bioclimatic aspects incorporated LEED and Well Rating System protocols: green roofs and courtyards, high-efficiency facades, sun protection, natural lighting, rainwater collection, photovoltaic panels, use of public services.
