Gasteig's temporary concert halls

The Gasteig is an important cultural center in Munich, renowned for being the home of the Münchener Philharmoniker and hosting several concert halls, including the Philharmonie (2,500 seats), Carl-Orff-Saal (600 seats), Black-Box (70 seats) and Kleiner Konzertsaal (200 seats), as well as a number of auditoriums for lectures and conferences. In view of a series of major renovation and modernization works for an expected duration of 4 years starting in 2020, it was necessary to plan the construction of a facility that would ensure the smooth running of the center's cultural activities.

For this purpose, the Alvisi Kirimoto firm designed two new temporary concert halls, equipped with all the necessary service facilities such as foyer, backstage, storage, offices and rehearsal rooms. The design of the larger hall, replacing the Philharmonic, included a capacity of 1,800 seats, to which was added the 700 seats of the smaller hall, replacing the Carl-Orff Saal. The structures, made entirely of glued laminated timber and X-Lam panels, were designed to be easily dismantled and removed once the Gasteig restoration work was completed.
