A tribute to the Singaporean sea

In the Piazza Garden area of Singapore's Changi Airport, a unique façade covers the new retail space of Tiffany & Co. Made of innovative materials including plastic from recycled fishing nets, it features an organic texture inspired by coral reefs and shades of blue reminiscent of the sea, including the company's trademark turquoise.

The technology of sustainable materials

The facade of the new commercial space, designed by studio MVRDV, consists of two layers juxtaposed together. The outermost one features a texture that recalls the organic shapes visible in coral reefs, one of the region's signature natural elements. The pattern of the first layer then stands out against the second, translucent layer, characterized instead by a succession of shades of blue, ranging from the intense color of the ocean to the turquoise “Robin Egg Blue,” representative of Tiffany.

The façade elements are made of a new construction material called Ocean rPPGF, composed of a 75% thermoplastic base recovered from recycled fishing nets, reinforced with glass fibers and then molded in three dimensions. To this mixture, to meet the requirements of the airport's fire regulations, BUROMILAN added a chemical made from seawater. A highly sustainable project, then, that intends to play an active role in protecting the oceans from pollution caused by plastics.
