*La prima Porta* explores the meaning of a threshold through two tall door panels clad in wood carved in a diamond pattern. The panels are left half-closed and have no frame, so that the work evokes an open passage rather than a barrier.
Inside the prison, the project supports inmates through educational and training programs aimed at personal growth. Outside, it encourages the community to overcome prejudice and recognize the human and rehabilitative value of correctional facilities.
The base as a frame
The two door panels are self-supporting elements edged with metal. They rest on a single steel plate that anchors them to the floor. The base provides the stability that, in a traditional door, would be provided by the frame, and the door panels remain free-standing in the space.
The second “Porta” is divided into two wooden installations. The first, located inside the prison, is an interface that informs inmates about job and training opportunities. The second, located in the public space of Piazzale Arnaldo, shares the reality of prison life with the city. These are two distinct thresholds that, by exchanging information, transform distance into inclusion.
Lifted off the ground
A 3-meter-tall wooden portal houses a screen door with steel profiles. The door rests on individual supports that lift it off the ground to protect both the electronics and the wood from moisture.
